Creating the BDCA (Best Darn CA)

It only took about 6 months for my boss to realize that I was not your typical CA. Once I had mastered the basics of the job (scheduling patients, office flow, paperwork, etc.), I started getting antsy. I knew I had more to offer the world than just filing papers and answering phones for the rest of my life. And maybe I wouldn’t be a CA forever, but while I was, I wanted to be the Best Darn CA possible.

Do you have anyone on your team like this? What can you do with a CA who isn’t content with sticking to their job description?

Well, first of all…Congratulations!!! I hope you’re not complaining, because that would be ridiculous. Second of all, with great power comes great responsibility. Please don’t take advantage of this amazing person or take them for granted because that would also be ridiculous and just plain awful.

So what should you do with the CA who wants to be great at her (or his) job? They definitely need direction and guidance. Here are three ways you can help them become the BDCA and be an asset to your practice:

1. Help them learn. There are so many great resources out there for blossoming leaders. Books, podcasts, videos, blogs…you name it! The first chiropractic book that got me fired up and passionate about the chiropractic message was Cruise Ship or Nursing Home by Dr. Ben Lerner. The first book my boss gave me was Start With Why by Simon Sinek. Those two books shaped me and pointed me in the right direction. If your CA doesn’t like to read – try the Storybrand podcast or find some awesome Ted talks. It doesn’t matter the venue, just help them grow into the leader they were born to be. 2. Take them to conferences. I know a lot of doctors are worried about the expense of taking their staff with them to conferences, especially when they’re out of state. But if you invest in their personal growth, the amazing CA will make it worth it. Getting to experience awesome conferences as a CA rocked my world and opened my eyes to the Big Picture of chiropractic. Chirofest, CalJam, and ChiroSushi are some great ones to take the staff to! 3. Get them a coach. It’s pretty normal for the chiropractor to have a business coach. It’s almost expected! But what about your CA? You’re willing to invest in yourself every week and you know how valuable it is to have the accountability. Don’t you think a coach would help your CA as well? When you have a CA who is growing and learning, you and your practice will benefit from it. Let’s face it. When you have an awesome CA, your job gets SO MUCH easier. Having a CA that sticks around saves you money, time, and energy. A great CA isn’t always luck…invest in your CA and you’ll be the one to reap the benefits.
